Our story

It began with ubtan, made at home.

In 2024, a little homemade ubtan, shared among friends, became the beginning of Aura Organics. Every product is still made by hand, in small batches, to classical recipes.

How the range grew

  1. Roots

    A family tradition

Hair oil and ubtan were made at home in our founder’s family, long before Aura Organics had a name.

  2. The gift

    A Haldi Kumkum gathering

Small packets of homemade ubtan were shared as gifts at a Haldi Kumkum gathering. Several guests came back to ask for more.

  3. 2024

    Our first order

Our very first order was a batch of ubtan for friends in Dubai.

  4. Word spreads

    Friends of friends

Neighbours, friends and their friends kept asking for more, and kept us going. A cream from a classical recipe came next, then a hair oil, a hair mask and a face pack.

  5. The exhibition

    Our first exhibition

At our first exhibition, visitors took home almost everything we had made, in a single day.

Preparation

Prepared in small batches, by hand

Every product is prepared, filled and packed by hand. Our hair oil, for one, is made by the kwatha-siddha taila-paka method, a traditional Ayurvedic way of preparing oils that asks for patience and a heavy brass vessel.

The recipes are inspired by traditional Ayurvedic beauty rituals, and by the hair oil and ubtan made at home in our founder’s family.

With gratitude

Begun with a little help from our friends

From the very beginning, Aura Organics has been carried by the kindness and support of our friends. They lent us vessels when ours were far away, and gathered fresh neem and hibiscus from their gardens for our products. They stood beside us at our first stall, wrote to tell us what they loved, and shared our products with the people dear to them. Our largest brass vessel, a 20-litre heirloom, was a gift from a friend’s family. We think of them, and are grateful for their support, in every batch.

How it’s made

Slow, small and by hand

  • VataJattadi Hair Oil

Each batch takes three to four days. When the decoction meets the hot oil, it foams up like boiling milk, so it is cooked in a heavy brass vessel three to four times the size of the batch, and stirred constantly, about 5 litres at a time.

  • Herbal Hair Mask

Seeds like fenugreek and kalonji are soaked overnight, then ground with fresh leaves and flowers. We never dry it into a powder: it is meant to be used fresh.

  • Sugandhi Ubtan

The herbs come from a trusted Ayurvedic merchant and are blended by hand, a little at a time, so that every pouch carries the same fragrant balance.

The founder

Our founder

Aura Organics was founded by Anjali Patankar, who grew up watching her mother make hair oil and ubtan at home. She still prepares every batch herself, slowly and in small quantities.
