What’s inside

And other herbs.

Tap a name to see what it is.

  • Black sesame oil (base) Oil pressed from black sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum). It is the base of this oil.

  • Vata jata (banyan aerial roots) The roots that hang from the branches of the banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis). The oil is named after them.

  • Bhringraj A small herb (Eclipta prostrata), also called false daisy.

  • Amla Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica).

  • Onion juice

Behind the ingredients

  • Bhringraj is called keshraja, “king of hair”, in classical Ayurvedic texts.
  • Amla is one of nature’s richest sources of vitamin C.
  • The oil takes its name from vata jata, the aerial roots of the banyan tree, and is slow-cooked for three to four days in a heavy brass vessel.

How to use

Start with clean hair, and comb it through thoroughly for a few minutes.

Open a large-text version with timers

Try the buttons below: start a timer at each step, and a soft chime tells you when the time is up.

  1. Pour 1–2 teaspoons of oil into a small bowl, a little more for long hair.

  2. Warm it gently by standing the bowl in a glass of hot water.

  3. Massage the warm oil into your scalp for 15–20 minutes.

  4. Wrap your head in a hot, well-wrung towel for a minute or two.

  5. Leave it on overnight. Wash the next morning, or smooth on the Herbal Hair Mask first.

Use it just as it is, without mixing it with other oils.

Storage & care

Keep the bottle tightly closed and upright, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Pour into a clean, dry bowl, and wipe the neck of the bottle after pouring.

  • Best used just as it is: mixing it with other oils softens its character.
  • For external use only.

How the oil is made

Three to four days, from dry herbs to a bottle of oil, about 5 litres at a time.

  1. Soak

The dry herbs are soaked in water for a day.

  2. Decoction

They are simmered into a decoction, called kwatha, while fresh amla and onion are juiced.

  3. Foam

The decoction and juices go into hot black sesame oil in a heavy brass vessel. The mixture foams up like boiling milk, so the vessel must be three to four times the size of the batch.

  4. Cook down

It is stirred and cooked slowly until the water has gone and only the oil remains. Then it is bottled.

Our largest brass vessel, which holds 20 litres, was a gift from a friend’s family. It reminds us how Aura Organics began: with friends who lent us vessels, gathered fresh leaves from their gardens, stood beside us at our first stall, and shared our products with the people they love.

A batch of hair oil, from the pot to the bottle: herbs in the pot, oil poured through a funnel, and bottles finished by hand. No sound.
